In a floating ball design, the ball is not mechanically fixed — line pressure pushes it against the downstream seat to create the seal. This works well in small sizes and low-to-medium pressure classes (NPS ½ to 4, Class 150 to 600). As valve size and pressure class increase, the force required to push the ball against the downstream seat becomes very large, resulting in very high operating torque — making floating ball designs impractical for actuated service at Class 900 and above or NPS 6 and above.
In a trunnion mounted design, the ball is held by upper and lower trunnion shafts — it cannot move laterally. The seats are spring-loaded and move axially against the ball. Pipeline pressure assists the seat load rather than creating a blind lateral force on the ball. This dramatically reduces operating torque — enabling smaller, more economical actuators. Trunnion mounted valves also allow Double Block and Bleed (DBB) functionality because both seats independently seal regardless of flow direction.
Trunnion mounted ball valves are the correct specification for any ball valve application at Class 600 and above in large bore (NPS 4+), or at Class 900 and above in any size. The selection between trunnion-mounted and floating ball valves is determined by four factors: line size, operating pressure, required torque, and the need for double-block-and-bleed isolation. Floating ball valves are suitable for NPS ½ to NPS 4 at lower pressure classes (Class 150 to 300) where the operating torque generated by fluid pressure against the floating ball body remains within actuator and operator limits. Above NPS 4, or in Class 600 and higher pressure classes, the pressure-generated seating force on a floating ball becomes mechanically excessive — requiring a trunnion to support the ball at top and bottom and transfer the pressure load into the valve body rather than the seats. Double Block and Bleed (DBB) refers to a valve that provides two independent seats that can block line pressure from both sides, plus a connection to bleed the cavity between the seats to atmospheric pressure. In a trunnion mounted ball valve, the upstream and downstream seats independently seal against the ball — enabling both seats to be closed simultaneously while the annular cavity between them is vented through a dedicated bleed valve.
