API 6D (identical to ISO 14313) is the American Petroleum Institute standard for pipeline valves — specifically covering ball valves, check valves, and plug valves used in trunk pipeline and gathering system applications. The API 6D 25th edition requires full-bore or reduced-bore design, fire-safe construction per API 6FA/607, and double-block-and-bleed (DBB) capability for injection and drain applications. Trunnion-mounted design is mandatory for Class 600 and above, and for floating design above NPS 6. EN 10204 3.1 MTCs are required for all SAEP-347 compatible ball valve body and trim materials.

Body material selection for API 6D ball valves depends on the service temperature, fluid, and SAEP-347/SAMSS specification requirements. The most common body material for general carbon steel pipeline service is ASTM A216 WCB (cast carbon steel, suitable from −29°C to 425°C). For stainless service, ASTM A351 CF8M (cast 316 SS) covers −196°C to 538°C and includes chloride and sour service resistance.

For H₂S sour service, API 6D ball valves must comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 hardness requirements: 22 HRC max for carbon steel, 28 HRC max for duplex stainless steel. API 608 covers metal ball valves for general process piping (Class 150 and 300 only), typically in plant/facility piping where the pipeline-specific requirements of API 6D are not specified. Saudi Aramco projects typically specify API 6D for pipeline service and ASME B16.34 / API 608 for plant process piping.
All SAEP-347 Annex 4 ball valve material numbers require full API 6D certification with fire-safe construction per API 607 and NACE MR0175 compliance for sour service designations.
