A globe valve uses a moveable plug (disc) that is lowered onto a stationary ring seat to stop flow. Unlike a gate or ball valve — which operates fully open or fully closed — the globe valve's linear disc travel allows precise throttling: the flow rate is proportional to how far the disc is raised from the seat. This makes globe valves the preferred choice wherever flow regulation or a tight shut-off with frequent cycling is required.

Globe valves are used extensively in Saudi Aramco facilities for: steam and condensate systems, cooling water control, fuel gas regulation, process bypass lines, and pump recirculation circuits. The S-shaped flow path creates higher pressure drop than a gate or ball valve — a trade-off accepted where throttling capability is needed.

Typical constructions in stock: bolted bonnet or pressure seal bonnet for higher pressure classes, rising stem with handwheel or actuator, PTFE or flexible graphite packing, and integral seat ring for easy maintenance. Available with or without actuator per SAEP-347 Annex 4 specifications.

A plug valve uses a cylindrical or tapered plug with a through-bore that rotates 90° between open and closed positions. In the open position the bore aligns with the pipe; in the closed position the solid plug wall blocks flow. Plug valves offer a straight-through flow path (when open) similar to a ball valve, but their quarter-turn motion and simple construction make them particularly suited to slurry, viscous fluids, and applications with abrasive or fibrous media where a ball valve seat could be damaged.

In Saudi Aramco service, plug valves are commonly found in wastewater treatment, produced water reinjection, crude oil distribution headers, and utility service lines where bi-directional sealing and easy maintenance are priorities. The lubricated plug valve design — used in oilfield service — uses injected lubricant sealant to reduce operating torque and prevent galling.
