Gate valves and ball valves are the two most common isolation valves in oil and gas piping — but they are not interchangeable for every application. Operation speed, pressure drop, shutoff quality, fire-safe requirements, and frequency of use all influence the correct choice. Here is the complete comparison for Aramco contractors and procurement engineers.

A side-by-side overview of the key engineering parameters. See the detailed sections below for each valve type.
| Parameter | Gate Valve | Ball Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Operation mechanism | Wedge gate slides perpendicular to flow; multi-turn handwheel | Ball rotates 90° to open/close; quarter-turn lever or actuator |
| Pressure drop (fully open) | Very low — gate retracts fully into bonnet, unobstructed bore | Negligible for full-bore; slightly higher for reduced-bore types |
| Flow path | Straight through — same bore as pipeline | Full bore: same as pipe; reduced bore: one or two sizes smaller |
| Shutoff quality | Good (metal seat); depends on gate/seat condition | Excellent — soft seat provides bubble-tight shutoff (Class VI) |
| Throttling service | Not suitable — partial opening causes gate erosion and seat damage | Not recommended for soft-seat types; V-port ball valves can throttle |
| Operation speed | Slow — 15–25 turns for full open/close | Fast — 90° quarter-turn; easily automated |
| Typical cost | Lower cost in large sizes (NPS 8 and above) | More economical in small sizes (NPS ½–2); higher in large sizes |
| Maintenance | Gland packing re-tightening; seat lapping possible in-line | Seat replacement requires line break; top-entry models allow in-line maintenance |
Gate valves are specified for isolation duty in oil & gas and petrochemical piping because their full-bore design creates zero flow restriction when fully open — critical for pig-able lines. Ball valves are preferred for quick quarter-turn operation where frequent cycling is required. The key decision criteria: if the line must maintain full flow area and pass inspection pigs, specify a gate valve; if rapid open/close operation is needed (control, emergency shutdown), specify a ball valve.
A gate valve is a linear-motion valve in which a flat or wedge-shaped disc (the gate) slides perpendicular to the flow path, retracting fully into the valve bonnet when open. Because the gate completely clears the flow path, gate valves produce essentially zero pressure drop in the fully open position — making them the preferred choice for large-bore piping where minimizing frictional losses is critical.
The stem travels upward as the valve opens, giving a clear visual indication of valve position. Preferred for above-ground, accessible installations where operators can see the stem height. Saudi Aramco specifies rising stem (OS&Y — Outside Screw and Yoke) for all process isolation valves above NPS 2.
The stem does not travel axially — it rotates in place while the gate moves. Used in underground or buried service where height clearance above the valve is limited (e.g., buried gate valves on water mains). Not preferred in oil and gas process piping because valve position cannot be visually confirmed.
Simple, strong, and suitable for most services including turbulent flow. The most common design for general carbon steel gate valves in oil and gas. Can be susceptible to thermal locking under temperature cycling.
A solid wedge with a peripheral groove cut around its circumference, allowing the gate to flex slightly to conform to the seat faces under temperature changes. Resists thermal locking. Common in steam and hot-service applications.
Two parallel discs spread apart by a spring mechanism when the valve closes, each bearing against its own seat. Provides self-adjusting seat contact and is preferred for knife-gate (slurry) service or pipelines conveying solids.
The primary standard for carbon and alloy steel flanged gate valves NPS 2 and larger. Covers pressure classes 150 through 2500, body and trim materials, pressure testing, NDE, and documentation. Saudi Aramco's 04-SAMSS-002 supplements API 600 with additional Aramco-specific requirements.
Covers small-bore gate valves (NPS ½ to NPS 4) in flanged, threaded, socket-weld, and butt-weld end connections. Body wall thickness is heavier than API 600 at small sizes. Commonly used for instrument root valves and small-bore utility connections.
Saudi Aramco specifies API 600 OS&Y rising-stem gate valves for hydrocarbon process isolation in NPS 3 and above. The 04-SAMSS-002 supplement mandates carbon steel body (ASTM A216 WCB or A105), Class 300 minimum for process service, live-loaded gland packing, and anti-blowout stem design. Gate valves are not permitted for steam tracing or instrument impulse lines — ball valves per 04-SAMSS-035 apply there.
Gate valves make economic sense for large-bore isolation: an API 600 gate valve in NPS 8, Class 300 (A216 WCB) typically costs 30–40% less than an equivalent trunnion-mounted ball valve at the same pressure class. In Gulf Union Ozone's Jeddah stock, the price crossover point sits around NPS 6 — below that, the difference narrows and a ball valve's lower maintenance cost often justifies the premium.
A ball valve is a quarter-turn rotary valve that uses a spherical ball with a cylindrical bore through its center. When the bore aligns with the pipeline, the valve is fully open; when rotated 90°, the solid wall of the ball blocks the flow path. Ball valves close faster than any other valve type, provide excellent tight shutoff, and are the preferred choice for automated (actuated) service.
The ball is not supported by a trunnion — it is held in position only by the seats. Line pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat to create the seal. Simple and economical. Suitable for sizes up to NPS 4 and pressure classes up to Class 600. At larger sizes or higher pressures, the seating force becomes too high for the operator — a trunnion-mounted design is then required.
The ball is supported by two trunnions (journals) at the top and bottom that absorb the pipeline pressure loads — the seats do not carry the full line pressure. This significantly reduces operating torque, enabling manual operation in large sizes and reliable automation with smaller actuators. Trunnion design is mandatory for Saudi Aramco pipeline isolation valves NPS 6 and above, and for all ESD (Emergency Shutdown) valves.
A full-bore (full-port) ball valve has a bore diameter equal to the pipeline inside diameter — pigging operations pass without restriction and pressure drop is negligible. A reduced-bore ball valve has a bore one to two nominal pipe sizes smaller than the valve face-to-face size — it is more compact and less expensive, but prevents pigging and increases pressure drop. Saudi Aramco mandates full-bore ball valves on all piggable pipelines and pig trap kicker and mainline valves.
API 607 defines the fire-test requirements for quarter-turn valves — including ball valves. A fire-safe ball valve must demonstrate acceptable shutoff after exposure to a fire test cycle that burns away the soft PTFE or RPTFE seat inserts. The metal-to-metal backup seat (or metal seat) then provides the secondary seal, preventing the valve from becoming a source of uncontrolled hydrocarbon release during a plant fire.
Saudi Aramco requires fire-safe certified ball valves (API 607 or BS 6755) for all process hydrocarbon service. Saudi Aramco also accepts BS 6755 Part 2 as an equivalent fire-test standard to API 607. Look for a third-party fire test certificate from an accredited laboratory (TUV, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) in the valve data book.
Fugitive emission requirements limit stem packing leakage to the atmosphere — a key environmental and safety obligation for hydrocarbon service at Aramco facilities. Both gate valves and ball valves must meet ISO 15848-1:2015+A1:2022 Class BH or AH stem tightness requirements, as specified in the applicable Piping Material Class sheet under SAES-L-108, or API 624 fugitive emission type testing.
Ball valves (API 6D) are specified for: quarter-turn on/off operation, pipeline block valves (trunnion mounted for Class 600 and above), emergency shut-down (ESD) valves, control valve duty with actuators, and fire-safe applications. Floating ball design for Class 150–600 ≤4" NPS; trunnion design for Class 600 and above or ≥6" NPS. Body material: A216 WCB, A351 CF8M, A350 LF2 for low-temperature service.
Apply these criteria together — no single factor determines the choice. Always defer to the applicable Piping Material Class (PMC) sheet and Saudi Aramco engineering standard for your specific service.
Both types are available in Class 150 through 2500. Trunnion ball valves are preferred at Class 900 and above in large sizes due to lower operating torque.
For viscous or dirty fluids, gate valves are sometimes preferred as the fully retracted gate is less prone to jamming than the cavities around a ball. For clean gas or liquid service, ball valves are equally suitable.
Ball valves have a shorter face-to-face length and require only a quarter-turn sweep. Gate valves require height clearance above the yoke for the rising stem — plan for stem travel equal to one pipe diameter.

A gate valve uses a rising or non-rising wedge gate that slides perpendicular to the flow path to open or close the valve — it requires multiple turns of the handwheel. A ball valve uses a spherical ball with a bore through it that rotates 90 degrees to align with or block the flow path — it opens and closes with a quarter-turn. Gate valves offer negligible pressure drop when fully open and are preferred for infrequent isolation; ball valves provide faster operation, better tight shutoff, and are available in fire-safe and fugitive emission-rated configurations. Gate valves are typically less expensive in large sizes; ball valves are preferred for frequent operation and automated (actuated) service.
Saudi Aramco specifies both valve types, with selection governed by SAES-L-108 piping material classes and 04-SAMSS-035 (ball valves) and 04-SAMSS-002 (gate valves). For NPS 2 and smaller, threaded or socket-weld ball valves per 04-SAMSS-035 are typically preferred for isolation duty due to cost and compact size. For NPS 3 and above in flanged configurations, gate valves per API 600 are common in hydrocarbon service. Ball valves are mandatory for automated (actuated) isolation, emergency shutdown (ESD), and pipeline pig trap applications. Always check the applicable Piping Material Class (PMC) sheet for the correct valve type, class, and end connection.
No — gate valves should never be used for throttling (flow control) service. When a gate valve is partially open, the gate vibrates due to the high-velocity fluid passing beneath it, causing erosion of the gate and seat faces. This rapidly destroys the seating surfaces and results in internal leakage when the valve is closed. Gate valves are strictly for fully-open or fully-closed (isolation) service only. For throttling, specify a globe valve, control valve, or plug valve depending on the flow range and fluid service.
API 600, 14th Edition (2022) covers flanged steel gate valves in NPS 2 and larger, with pressure classes from Class 150 to 2500. API 602, 12th Edition (2022) covers compact steel gate valves in NPS ½ through NPS 4 — in threaded, socket-weld, butt-weld, and flanged end connections — with a heavier wall thickness relative to bore size. In practice, API 600 is specified for main process lines in Class 150–2500, while API 602 is used for small-bore connections, instrument root valves, and utility tie-ins at NPS 4 and below.
A fire-safe ball valve incorporates a metal-to-metal backup seat behind the primary soft PTFE or RPTFE seat. If the soft seats are destroyed in a fire, the metal backup provides emergency shutoff, preventing the valve from becoming an uncontrolled hydrocarbon release point. Saudi Aramco requires fire-safe certified ball valves — tested to API 607, 8th Edition (2016) or BS 6755 Part 2 — for all process hydrocarbon service. Third-party fire test certification from an accredited laboratory (TUV, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek) must be included in the valve data book per 04-SAMSS-035.
Standard ball valves are not designed for modulating (throttling) service. When partially open, high-velocity flow past the ball causes seat erosion and damages the soft PTFE inserts. For throttling applications, specify a globe valve, control valve, or a purpose-designed characterized ball valve (V-port or segmented ball) rated for modulating service. In standard process piping, ball valves are restricted to on/off (fully open or fully closed) isolation duty unless specifically designated as a characterized control device.
