A fire safe valve maintains acceptable body and seat leakage performance during and after a fire. The primary concern in a soft-seated ball valve is the PTFE or RPTFE seat — these polymer materials melt and burn at temperatures reached in a hydrocarbon fire. Without a backup metal seat, the valve would fail open under fire conditions, turning an isolation point into an uncontrolled fuel source.
A fire safe ball valve incorporates a metal-to-metal secondary seat behind the primary soft seat. When the PTFE is destroyed, the metal backup seals against the ball under spring pressure. API 607, 8th Edition (2016) quantifies the fire test procedure: the valve is burned at 760 °C for 30 minutes, then cooled with water spray, and tested for seat leakage and body leakage. Fire safe certification (API 607 or API 6FA) is not a quality mark — it is a safety-critical procurement requirement for all ball valves in Saudi Aramco hydrocarbon process service. A valve without a third-party fire test certificate cannot be used in these applications regardless of manufacturer claims. API 607 and API 6FA are the two fire-safe testing standards for industrial valves, and Saudi Aramco SAEP-347 references both depending on valve type and service. API 607 applies to resilient-seated quarter-turn valves — primarily ball valves and butterfly valves — requiring a timed fire test that validates the valve can achieve external leakage below defined limits after seat burnout and demonstrates full function before, during, and after exposure. API 6FA applies to valves with metal-seated designs, including gate valves and globe valves used in fire-hazard hydrocarbon service. The distinction matters in procurement: specifying API 607 on a gate valve, or API 6FA on a ball valve, is technically incorrect. Saudi Aramco 04-SAMSS fire-safe valve requirements go beyond the base API 607 or API 6FA test certificate. SAEP-347 Annex 4 fire-safe ball and gate valves must additionally carry: body casting EN 10204 3.1 MTCs with chemical composition and mechanical properties, API 598 hydrostatic test report, fire-test certificate from an accredited third-party laboratory per API 607 or API 6FA (not manufacturer-witnessed only), an anti-static device test record confirming resistance below 10 ohms per API 6D/API 607, and a Certificate of Conformance referencing the applicable SAEP-347 Annex 4 material number and 04-SAMSS specification. For NPS 4 and above, an emergency stem sealant injection fitting port must be present and documented on the valve drawing.
