Standard Overview

What Is API 600?

API 600 is the American Petroleum Institute standard for steel gate valves — flanged and butt-welding ends — for petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas piping. API 600 gate valves are heavy-duty, through-conduit, rising-stem gate valves in cast carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel. They are the dominant gate valve type in Saudi Aramco oil and gas facilities.

The API 600 standard covers gate valves from NPS 2″ to NPS 24″ in Class 150 to Class 2500. For smaller sizes (NPS ½″ to NPS 1½″), API 602 (compact steel gate valves) applies. Gulf Union Ozone stocks both API 600 and API 602 gate valves — all with EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTCs and SAEP-347 compatibility.

Key design features of API 600 gate valves: (1) Full bore (through-conduit) — valve bore equals pipe bore, enabling pig passage; (2) Rising stem with OS&Y — open/closed position visually indicated; (3) Wedge gate — positive shutoff, low leakage; (4) Bolted bonnet — in-line packing replacement without valve removal. All wetted metallic parts conform to ASTM material specifications with hardness limits appropriate to the service.

In Summary

API 600 defines the full-port gate valve standard for cast carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB), cast stainless steel (A351 CF8M), and low-alloy steel (WC6/WC9) body materials in ASME Class 150 through 2500. All API 600 gate valves use outside-screw-and-yoke (OS&Y) rising stem design, bolted bonnet, and are hydrostatic-tested to API 598. They are the most common valve type in SAEP-347 Annex 4 valve material numbers.

Body Materials

API 600 Gate Valve Body Materials — Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel & Stainless Steel

ASTM A216 WCB — Carbon Steel

The most common API 600 body material. WCB carbon steel castings for high-temperature service. Temperature range: −29°C to 538°C. Used for the majority of oil and gas, refinery, and process piping applications on Saudi Aramco and EPC projects in Saudi Arabia. Compatible with multiple SAEP-347 Annex 4 material numbers.

Tensile485 MPa min Yield250 MPa min Hardness≤22 HRC (NACE) Temp−29°C to 538°C

ASTM A217 WC6 / WC9 — Alloy Steel

Alloy steel API 600 gate valves for elevated temperature service above the WCB limit. WC6 is 1¼Cr-½Mo; WC9 is 2¼Cr-1Mo. Specified for refinery fired heater piping, steam superheater headers, and high-temperature hydrogen service above 343°C. Available on request.

ASTM A351 CF8M — Stainless Steel

Cast austenitic stainless steel (CF8M = 316 SS equivalent) gate valves for corrosive service — seawater cooling, chemical injection, chloride streams, and offshore. CF8M provides equivalent corrosion resistance to 316 SS. Available on request; see also API 603 for Class 150/300 lighter construction.

In Summary

API 600 gate valves are manufactured in three body materials for Saudi Aramco projects: WCB carbon steel (most common; covers temperatures −29°C to 425°C), WC6 1¼Cr-½Mo alloy (elevated temperature up to 540°C), and WC9 2¼Cr-1Mo alloy (high-temperature/high-pressure service). CF8M stainless steel is selected for corrosive service, produced water, and sour service lines. All body materials carry ASME B16.34 pressure ratings.

Standard Comparison

API 600 vs API 602 vs API 603 — Which Standard?

Three API gate valve standards cover different applications. Saudi Aramco SAEP-347 specifies separate material numbers for each. Gulf Union Ozone stocks all three.

In Summary

API 600 gate valves differ from API 603 (lightweight corrosion-resistant) and API 6D (pipeline valve) standards. API 600 is the correct specification for plant isolation valves in oil & gas and petrochemical service. API 603 uses thinner castings for non-destructive service. API 6D governs pipeline block valves and is the correct standard for trunnion ball valves. Specifying the wrong standard is a common procurement error on Aramco projects.

SAEP-347 & Sour Service

API 600 Gate Valves for Saudi Aramco and Sour Service

For Saudi Aramco SAEP-347 projects, API 600 gate valves must conform to the specific material numbers in Annex 4. Gulf Union Ozone supplies with: (1) EN 10204 Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificate from the originating foundry; (2) Certificate of Conformance referencing the SAEP-347 material number; (3) heat number cross-reference report for Aramco Goods Receipt inspection traceability.

Sour Service Requirements — NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156

  • Carbon steel body (WCB): hardness ≤22 HRC (237 HBW) in body, trim, and weld HAZ
  • NACE MR0175 compliance must be specified on the RFQ and documented in the EN 10204 3.1 MTC
  • Aramco SAES-L-133 may require hardness surveys (Brinell) on the body and weld areas
  • Specify H₂S partial pressure in the RFQ so we can confirm the correct NACE grade and trim material
RFQ Information Required
  1. Valve type — Gate (confirm API 600)
  2. Size — NPS e.g. 8″, 12″
  3. Pressure class — e.g. Class 600
  4. Body material — WCB / WC6 / CF8M
  5. End connections — Flanged RF / BW
  6. SAEP-347 material number (if Aramco)
  7. Sour service? Y/N — if yes: H₂S partial pressure
  8. Quantity and required delivery date
Frequently Asked Questions

API 600 Gate Valves — FAQ

What is the difference between API 600 and API 603 gate valves?

API 600 covers heavy-duty cast steel gate valves (NPS 2″–24″, Class 150–2500) in carbon, alloy, or stainless steel for general oil, gas, and petrochemical service. API 603 covers lighter cast stainless steel gate valves (NPS ½″–24″, Class 150 and 300 only) for corrosive-service applications. Saudi Aramco SAEP-347 specifies separate material numbers for each standard.

Are API 600 gate valves compatible with Saudi Aramco SAEP-347?

Yes. API 600 cast steel gate valves in ASTM A216 WCB appear in SAEP-347 Annex 4 for standard process piping. Gulf Union Ozone supplies these with EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTCs and a Certificate of Conformance referencing the SAEP-347 material number — meeting Aramco Goods Receipt inspection requirements.

Can API 600 gate valves be used in sour service?

ASTM A216 WCB gate valves can be used in sour service (NACE MR0175) provided hardness ≤22 HRC (237 HBW) in the body, disc, and stem. WCB is typically within this limit, but NACE compliance must be confirmed per heat and documented in the EN 10204 3.1 MTC. For Aramco sour service (SAES-L-133), specify NACE MR0175 compliance explicitly on the RFQ.
