API 600 is the American Petroleum Institute standard for steel gate valves — flanged and butt-welding ends — for petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas piping. API 600 gate valves are heavy-duty, through-conduit, rising-stem gate valves in cast carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel. They are the dominant gate valve type in Saudi Aramco oil and gas facilities.

API 600 defines the full-port gate valve standard for cast carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB), cast stainless steel (A351 CF8M), and low-alloy steel (WC6/WC9) body materials in ASME Class 150 through 2500. All API 600 gate valves use outside-screw-and-yoke (OS&Y) rising stem design, bolted bonnet, and are hydrostatic-tested to API 598. They are the most common valve type in SAEP-347 Annex 4 valve material numbers.

Cast austenitic stainless steel (CF8M = 316 SS equivalent) gate valves for corrosive service — seawater cooling, chemical injection, chloride streams, and offshore. API 600 gate valves are manufactured in three body materials for Saudi Aramco projects: WCB carbon steel (most common; covers temperatures −29°C to 425°C), WC6 1¼Cr-½Mo alloy (elevated temperature up to 540°C), and WC9 2¼Cr-1Mo alloy (high-temperature/high-pressure service). CF8M stainless steel is selected for corrosive service, produced water, and sour service lines. All body materials carry ASME B16.34 pressure ratings.

API 600 gate valves differ from API 603 (lightweight corrosion-resistant) and API 6D (pipeline valve) standards. API 600 is the correct specification for plant isolation valves in oil & gas and petrochemical service. API 603 uses thinner castings for non-destructive service. API 6D governs pipeline block valves and is the correct standard for trunnion ball valves. Specifying the wrong standard is a common procurement error on Aramco projects.
For Saudi Aramco SAEP-347 projects, API 600 gate valves must conform to the specific material numbers in Annex 4.
