SS 316 / 316L

Marine Grade

The marine and chloride-resistant grade. Added molybdenum (2–3%) delivers superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Essential for offshore platforms, desalination plants, seawater cooling systems, and coastal NEOM infrastructure where chloride exposure is constant.

Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205)

Oil & Gas

Combines the high strength of ferritic steel with the corrosion resistance of austenitic. The preferred grade for oil and gas, offshore, and sour service applications. PREN greater than 35 — excellent resistance to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking. Roughly twice the yield strength of 316L — enabling weight savings in structural applications.

Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32750)

Severe Service

For the most severe corrosion environments — high-chloride, high-temperature, and demanding chemical service. Superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Used in FPSOs, subsea applications, chlorine production, and the most aggressive desalination service streams.

When Stainless Steel Outperforms Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is the default in most oil and gas piping — but specific service conditions require stainless steel to avoid premature failure, unplanned maintenance, and safety risks.

Choose Stainless When:

  • Chloride content exceeds 200 ppm in the service fluid
  • H2S service (sour service) is present — duplex grade required
  • High-temperature oxidation service above 450°C
  • Long service life with minimal maintenance is required
  • Process fluid is seawater or brackish water

Carbon Steel Remains Suitable When:

  • Dry gas or non-corrosive hydrocarbon service
  • Budget constraints and shorter design life accepted
  • Cathodic protection is applied and monitored
