In Summary

ASTM A234 Grade WPB is the standard carbon steel material for ASME B16.9 factory-made butt-weld pipe fittings, covering the full range used in Saudi Aramco process piping: 90-degree and 45-degree long-radius elbows, 90-degree short-radius elbows, equal tees, reducing tees, concentric reducers, eccentric reducers, and end caps. The long-radius 90-degree elbow has a centerline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size, the standard for most Aramco process lines per SAES-L-108. SAEP-347 Annex 5 defines 18 carbon steel butt-weld fitting material numbers. Gulf Union Ozone stocks the full Annex 5 range with ex-stock coverage from NPS ½ to NPS 24 in schedules from Schedule 40 to Schedule XXH (double extra heavy). For sour H₂S service, normalized A234 WPB fittings are required per NACE MR0175, with hardness not exceeding 22 HRC. All fittings ship with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates from the producing mill, traceable by heat number to the physical marking on each fitting, with actual chemistry and mechanical test results confirmed per ASTM A234 limits.

Saudi Aramco Procurement

SAEP-347 Annex 5 — Carbon Steel Butt Weld Fitting Material Numbers

Saudi Aramco Engineering Procedure SAEP-347 establishes approved material numbers for all procurement of piping system components. Annex 5 covers factory-made butt weld pipe fittings. Suppliers must hold approved stockist status for these material numbers. Gulf Union Ozone is an approved SAEP-347 stockist in Jeddah, Western Region. All purchase orders reference SAEP-347 material numbers, and all material trace documentation is issued per EN 10204 3.1.

SAEP-347 No. ASTM Grade Description Mfg. Method GUO Status
F-025 ASTM A234 WPB Carbon steel seamless butt weld fittings Seamless (S) Approved stockist
F-026 ASTM A234 WPB Carbon steel welded butt weld fittings ERW / W Approved stockist
F-028 ASTM A234 WPB Carbon steel normalized BW fittings — sour service Seamless (S) Approved stockist
F-031 ASTM A234 WP11 1¼Cr-½Mo alloy butt weld fittings — high temp Seamless (S) Approved stockist
F-034 ASTM A234 WP22 2¼Cr-1Mo alloy butt weld fittings — hydrocracker Seamless (S) Approved stockist

SAEP-347 material numbers are subject to revision. Verify current Annex 5 numbers in SAEP-347 (latest revision) before purchase order issuance. Gulf Union Ozone can assist with documentation verification.

SAEP-347 Annex 5 defines 18 carbon steel butt-weld fitting material numbers for Saudi Aramco process facilities, covering the full ASME B16.9 product range. The 18 numbers are organized by fitting type and wall thickness: 90-degree long-radius elbows (Schedule 40, Schedule 80, Schedule 160/XXH), 45-degree elbows (standard and heavy wall), equal tees, reducing tees, concentric reducers, eccentric reducers, and end caps — each available in standard ASTM A234 WPB carbon steel and in ASTM A420 WPL6 low-temperature carbon steel for cold service. Sizes run from NPS ½ (DN 15) to NPS 24 (DN 600). The key procurement requirement is to state the fitting type, nominal pipe size, wall schedule, and the explicit SAEP-347 Annex 5 material number on the purchase order to ensure the correct EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate accompanies delivery. Gulf Union Ozone stocks all 18 Annex 5 fitting types ex-Jeddah with EN 10204 3.1 documentation on every delivery.

Sour Service Requirements

NACE MR0175 Requirements for Carbon Steel Butt Weld Fittings

Saudi Aramco production and gas processing systems frequently involve wet H₂S service (sour service). NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 defines the hardness limits and metallurgical requirements for carbon steel fittings in sour service. Non-compliant fittings can cause hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) or sulfide stress cracking (SSC) — both lead to catastrophic failures in wet H₂S environments.

NACE MR0175 Hardness Limits
  • Max 22 HRC (Rockwell C-scale)
  • Max 250 HBW (Brinell)
  • All heat-affected zones must comply
  • Production hardness test per piece required on SAEP-347 sour service fittings
Required Processing — Sour Service
  • Normalized: Required for WPB fittings in sour service
  • PWHT: Required for WP11, WP22 alloy fittings
  • Seamless: Strongly preferred; ERW requires weld seam PWHT
  • HIC testing: NACE TM0284 per SAEP-347 Annex 5
MTC Requirements for Sour Service
  • EN 10204 3.1 MTC — mandatory
  • Chemistry certified to ASTM A234 limits
  • Hardness test results per piece
  • NACE compliance statement from mill
  • HIC test report (NACE TM0284) if required

NACE MR0175 (ISO 15156) compliance for carbon steel butt-weld fittings in H₂S sour service requires three verifiable conditions. First, the fitting material must be in the normalized or normalized-and-tempered condition — cold-worked or quench-and-tempered ASTM A234 WPB is not acceptable for sour service. Second, the maximum hardness anywhere in the fitting body or weld-affected zone must not exceed 22 HRC (237 HV). Third, hardness must be verified by actual Brinell or Rockwell measurement on representative samples from each heat number, not simply declared by reference to the nominal specification. For SAEP-347 applications on Aramco sour service piping systems (SAES-L-133 Category M and Category M-H₂S), the EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate must show the actual measured hardness values. Gulf Union Ozone maintains NACE MR0175-compliant ASTM A234 WPB fittings with hardness-documented EN 10204 3.1 certificates for all sour service deliveries.

FAQ

Butt Weld Fittings — Common Questions Answered

What is the difference between a 90° long radius and 90° short radius elbow?

A 90° long radius (LR) elbow per ASME B16.9 has a centerline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size (1.5D). A 90° short radius (SR) elbow per ASME B16.28 has a centerline radius equal to the nominal pipe size (1.0D). Long radius elbows produce lower pressure drop (approximately 50% less than SR) and are the standard for most Saudi Aramco process piping per SAES-L-108. Short radius elbows are permitted only where space constraints make 1.5D impractical — they are not recommended for slug flow, erosive service, or high-velocity gas lines.

When should I use a concentric reducer vs an eccentric reducer?

Concentric reducers (CON) maintain a shared centerline at both ends — used on vertical pipe runs and gas service where the flow is symmetric. Eccentric reducers (ECC) have one flat face — used on horizontal liquid lines to prevent vapor pockets from forming at the reducer. On pump suction lines, SAES-L-108 specifies eccentric reducers installed with the flat side up (flat on top / FOT) to prevent cavitation by allowing any air pockets to migrate back. Gulf Union Ozone supplies both types in all standard schedules from NPS 1 to 24.

What is the difference between ASTM A234 and ASTM A403 butt weld fittings?

ASTM A234 covers wrought carbon steel and alloy steel butt weld fittings — including grades WPB (carbon steel), WPC, WP11, WP22, WP91, and low-temperature grades WPL3, WPL6. ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel butt weld fittings — including grades WP304, WP304L, WP316, WP316L. The selection depends on the pipe material: A234 WPB matches ASTM A106 and API 5L carbon steel pipe; A403 WP316L matches ASTM A312 TP316L stainless steel pipe. Both must be ordered to match the pipe material, wall schedule, and SAEP-347 material number for Saudi Aramco procurement.
