Steam tracer size is selected by calculating the heat loss from the process pipe at minimum ambient temperature and comparing it with the heat input from the tracer at available steam pressure. The API RP 14E method uses the pipe outer diameter, insulation thickness, thermal conductivity and steam temperature to determine the tracer heat flux (W/m). For Saudi winter ambient of 5–15°C and viscosity-maintenance duties, a single 1/2" OD copper tracer at 3 bar steam is typically sufficient for DN50–DN150 lines; larger or colder lines require multiple tracers or higher steam pressure.
Thermodynamic (disc) traps operate on the difference in velocity between condensate and flash steam; they snap open to discharge condensate and snap shut against steam, making them compact and robust but prone to wear in cycling service. They suit small-bore steam tracer systems (low condensate load). Float-and-thermostatic (F&T) traps have a float that rises with condensate level to continuously discharge condensate at steam temperature, with a thermostatic air vent for start-up. F&T traps handle variable loads better and are preferred for jacketed lines and manifold stations with multiple tracers. Gulf Union Ozone stocks both types from DN15 to DN50 in stainless and carbon steel.
Electric heat tracing is preferred when steam is not available at the trace location (remote pipe racks, instrument impulse lines), when the traced line is in an ATEX Zone 1 area where steam leaks could carry combustible gas, or when maintenance costs of steam traps are to be minimised. Self-regulating electric trace cable automatically reduces wattage as the pipe temperature rises, preventing overheating.
