ASTM A234 governs butt-weld fittings; ASTM A182 governs flanges. Understanding which grade variant, pressure class, and Aramco SAMSS reference applies to your piping class prevents specification errors and rejected materials at inspection.

ASTM A234 — Standard Specification for Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and High Temperature Service — covers elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and other butt-weld fittings manufactured by forming (not casting) from pipe or plate material.
For Saudi Aramco projects, A234 WPB fittings are specified in the vast majority of carbon steel piping classes. The applicable Aramco internal standard is 02-SAMSS-005 (Carbon Steel Butt-Weld Fittings), which references A234 WPB as the primary material requirement for general carbon steel service.
For alloy steel service (high-temperature, high-pressure, or corrosive applications), alloy grades WP11, WP22, WP5, and WP9 are specified. These correspond to the Cr-Mo alloy steel grades commonly used in hot service piping systems.
| Grade | Material | Min. Yield | Temp. Range | Aramco Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WPB | Carbon Steel | 240 MPa | -29°C to 538°C | Standard CS — most common |
| WPC | High-Strength CS | 275 MPa | -29°C to 538°C | Higher strength |
| WPL6 | LTCS (A420) | 275 MPa | -46°C to 345°C | Cold service, LNG |
| WP11 Cl.1 | 1¼Cr–½Mo | 205 MPa | -29°C to 593°C | Elevated temp / H2 |
| WP22 Cl.1 | 2¼Cr–1Mo | 205 MPa | -29°C to 649°C | High-temp, hydrocracker |
| WP5 | 5Cr–½Mo | 205 MPa | -29°C to 649°C | Naphtha, corrosive |
| WP304L | 304L SS | 170 MPa | -268°C to 538°C | Stainless / non-corrosive |
| WP316L | 316L SS | 170 MPa | -268°C to 538°C | Stainless / chloride |
Specifying any fitting or flange for SAEP-347 procurement requires six parameters to be confirmed before a purchase order is raised. First, the ASTM material specification: A105N for carbon steel forgings and flanges, A182 F316L for stainless steel flanges and forged fittings, A234 WPB for carbon steel butt-weld fittings, or A403 WP316L for stainless steel butt-weld fittings. Second, the ASME dimensional standard: B16.5 for flanges NPS ½ to 24, B16.9 for butt-weld fittings, B16.11 for socket-weld and threaded forged fittings, or B16.47 for large-bore flanges NPS 26 and above. Third, pressure class or wall schedule: Class 150 through 2500 for flanges, Schedule 40 through XXH for butt-weld fittings. Fourth, the nominal pipe size in inches. Fifth, the end connection type: butt-weld, socket-weld, threaded, raised face, or ring type joint. Sixth, the SAEP-347 Annex 4 material number from the project bill of materials. Gulf Union Ozone engineers assist with specification confirmation, material number cross-referencing, and documentation preparation for Saudi Aramco project submittals.
ASTM A182 — Standard Specification for Forged or Rolled Alloy-Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings, and Valves and Parts for High-Temperature Service — covers flanges produced by forging or rolling, as distinct from A234's wrought/formed products.
A182 flanges are specified to ASME B16.5 (NPS ½" to 24", Class 150–2500) and ASME B16.47 (NPS 26" and above). The applicable Aramco internal standard for flanges is 02-SAMSS-011.
Note: Carbon steel flanges for standard Aramco service are typically specified to ASTM A105 (forgings) rather than A182 — A182 grades are the alloy steel and stainless steel flange grades. When a piping class specifies "A182 F304L flanges" it means 304L stainless steel weld-neck flanges; "A182 F11 flanges" means 1¼Cr-½Mo alloy steel flanges.
| Grade | Material | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| F11 | 1¼Cr–½Mo Alloy Steel | Elevated temp service |
| F22 | 2¼Cr–1Mo Alloy Steel | High temp, H2 service |
| F304L | 304L Stainless Steel | Standard stainless |
| F316L | 316L Stainless Steel | Chloride / marine |
| F51 | Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803) | Seawater, produced water |
| F53 | Super Duplex 2507 (S32750) | High-chloride service |
| F42 | Carbon Steel LTCS | Low-temperature |
| F91 | 9Cr–1Mo–V Alloy Steel | Ultra high-temp |
Three of the most common specification queries Gulf Union Ozone receives involve confusion between these three standards. Here is the quick answer:
For: Flanges (weld neck, slip-on, blind, socket weld) in standard carbon steel service. Also covers socket weld and threaded fittings (ASME B16.11).
Not for: Butt-weld fittings (use A234 WPB instead). Not for alloy service.
For: Butt-weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps in standard carbon steel piping. ASME B16.9 dimensions.
Not for: Flanges (use A105 or A182). Not for socket weld or threaded fittings.
For: Stainless steel flanges (and forged fittings) where A105 is not suitable — chloride service, high-temperature alloy, duplex grades.
Note: F304L = 304L SS flanges; F316L = 316L SS flanges; F51 = duplex 2205 flanges.
For a standard carbon steel piping class (SAES-L-105 Class A1A, for example): Flanges = ASTM A105, Butt-weld fittings = ASTM A234 WPB. When you see "A182" on an Aramco P&ID or piping class, it signals an alloy steel or stainless steel piping class — the specific F-grade tells you which alloy. Both the A234 and A182 materials must comply with ASME B16.9 / B16.5 dimensional requirements and 02-SAMSS-005 / 02-SAMSS-011 quality requirements for Aramco supply.
Gulf Union Ozone stocks products meeting the specifications of the following SAEP-347 Annex 4 fitting and flange material numbers:
Saudi Aramco project specifications frequently call for piping components to be sourced from vendors on the Approved Vendor List (AVL) for the applicable SAMSS number. For SAEP-347 Annex 4 piping components, the relevant SAMSS numbers include SAMSS-001 (piping fittings), SAMSS-002 (flanges and pressure fittings), SAMSS-005 (pipe), and SAMSS-012 (valves). Gulf Union Ozone supplies SAEP-347 compatible components traceable to manufacturers listed on the Aramco AVL for each applicable SAMSS. When an EPC contractor requires dual certification — compliance with both the ASTM product standard and EN 10204 3.1 material certification — Gulf Union Ozone satisfies both requirements from approved European and North American manufacturers whose material test certificates carry the required mill inspector counter-signature. SAEP-347 Annex 4 material number reference is included on all Gulf Union Ozone quotations and delivery notes.
