Standard valves fail in cryogenic service for two reasons: material embrittlement and packing failure. Carbon steel loses ductility below approximately −29 °C — impact energy drops sharply and the material becomes susceptible to brittle fracture under pressure shock or thermal cycling. At the same time, standard packing materials (asbestos substitutes, graphite composites) cannot maintain a seal when frost forms on the gland because dimensional contraction breaks gland contact.
Cryogenic valves address both problems. The extended bonnet (also called long bonnet or cold box bonnet) extends the stem by 150–400 mm above the valve body so that the packing gland operates at or near ambient temperature — well above the frost point.
