International EPC contractors and engineering firms working on Saudi Aramco projects frequently encounter both ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and EN (European Norm) material designations. This guide provides material equivalency tables for carbon steel and stainless steel pipe, fittings, and flanges — and explains when EN materials are acceptable as ASTM substitutions under Saudi Aramco's SAEP-347 and SAES procurement rules.
| ASTM Grade | Application | EN Equivalent | EN Designation | Key Differences |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A106 Gr B | Seamless CS pipe, high-temperature service, plant piping | EN 10216-2 | P265GH | EN P265GH carbon max 0.17% vs A106 Gr B 0.30%; tighter composition. Yield similar. |
| ASTM A106 Gr A | Seamless CS pipe, lower strength tier | EN 10216-1 | P235TR1 | P235TR1 for ambient; P235GH for elevated temperature service. |
| API 5L Grade B PSL1 | Welded or seamless CS pipeline pipe | EN 10208-2 | L245NE / L245ME | API 5L PSL2 requirements are closer to EN 10208-2 NE/ME classes. PSL1 is less stringent. |
| API 5L X52 PSL2 | High-strength pipeline pipe | EN 10208-2 | L360NE / L360ME | L360NE (normalized) / L360ME (thermo-mechanical). Charpy energy and CVN test requirements differ. |
| ASTM A333 Gr 6 | Seamless CS pipe for low-temperature service (−46°C) | EN 10216-4 | P275NL2 | Both require Charpy impact testing at −46°C. Impact energy requirements differ; verify application values. |
| ASTM A312 TP316L | Seamless/welded stainless steel pipe, 316L | EN 10216-5 / EN 10217-7 | 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) | EN 10216-5 = seamless; EN 10217-7 = welded. Verify C ≤ 0.03% on MTC to confirm L-grade. |
Saudi Aramco projects simultaneously reference ASTM material standards and the EN 10204 certification standard because they answer two different questions: ASTM defines WHAT the material is — its chemical composition, mechanical properties, manufacturing process, and testing requirements — while EN 10204 defines HOW that material is certified. ASTM A105 specifies the forged carbon steel flanges and fittings; ASTM A234 WPB specifies the butt-weld pipe fittings; ASTM A182 F316L specifies the forged stainless steel components. EN 10204 Type 3.1 specifies that the manufacturer's test certificate must be validated by an inspector independent of the production department, creating a document chain from heat number through chemical test to certified delivery. SAEP-347 requires both: materials must meet the ASTM specification AND arrive with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. Supplying ASTM-conforming material with only a Type 2.2 certificate, or an EN-origin material without a 3.1 MTC, will both fail Aramco Goods Receipt acceptance.
| ASTM Grade | Fitting Type | EN Equivalent | EN Grade / Material No. | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A234 WPB | Carbon steel butt weld fittings (elbows, tees, reducers) | EN 10253-2 | P235 / P265 | EN 10253-2 covers butt welding fittings; Type A (without specific inspection) or Type B (with EN 10204 3.1). Must specify Type B for SAEP-347. |
| ASTM A403 WP316L | Stainless steel butt weld fittings | EN 10253-4 | 1.4404 (316L) | EN 10253-4 = austenitic and duplex stainless butt weld fittings. Specify 1.4404 (not 1.4401) for low carbon. EN 10204 3.1 Type B required for SAEP-347. |
| ASTM A403 WP304L | Stainless steel butt weld fittings, 304L | EN 10253-4 | 1.4307 (304L) | EN 1.4307 = low carbon 304L. Note: 1.4301 is standard carbon (304); always specify 1.4307 for L-grade. Verify C ≤ 0.03% on MTC. |
| ASTM A105 | Forged carbon steel socket weld and threaded fittings | EN 10222-2 | P250GH | EN 10222-2 P250GH is widely cited as A105 equivalent for flanges and fittings. P250GH has slightly higher carbon content limit (0.22%) than A105 (0.35% max — but actual certificates typically show much lower). Verify application-specific acceptance. |
| ASTM A182 F316L | Forged stainless steel fittings and flanges (socket weld, threaded) | EN 10222-5 | 1.4404 (X2CrNiMo17-12-2) | Well-established equivalence. Verify actual C ≤ 0.03% on the 3.1 MTC — 1.4401 (standard carbon) is sometimes supplied instead. |

ASTM and EN use different impact test temperatures, specimen sizes, and acceptance criteria. An A106 Gr B pipe does not require Charpy impact testing at all — EN P265GH does not either for most temperatures, but EN 10216-4 does. Always check if the EN equivalent has the SAME test requirements as the ASTM grade specified.
Material equivalence does NOT mean dimensional equivalence. ASTM A234 WPB fittings are dimensioned to ASME B16.9. EN 10253-2 fittings follow EN dimensions. For Saudi Aramco ASME-designed piping, all fittings must meet ASME B16.9 dimensions regardless of material standard used.
Saudi Aramco SAEP-347 requires EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTCs for all pipe, fittings, and flanges — whether the material is ASTM or EN origin. The 3.1 MTC must be from the original mill, show actual values (not just "meets ASTM A234 WPB"), and be signed by a 3.1-qualified inspector independent of production. EN 10204 3.1 guide →
ASTM materials are marked with the ASTM standard designation, grade, and heat number. EN materials use a different marking convention (EN standard number, material grade number, material number). For SAEP-347 Goods Receipt, inspectors verify markings match the 3.1 MTC — ensure the pipe or fitting marking system is declared on the MTC.
The most common substitution error in stainless piping: mills supplying 1.4301 (standard 304, carbon up to 0.07%) instead of 1.4307 (304L, carbon max 0.03%), or 1.4401 (standard 316) instead of 1.4404 (316L, carbon max 0.03%). ALWAYS verify actual carbon content on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC — the material number alone is not sufficient if the mill did not restrict to the low-carbon variant.
Flanges to ASME B16.5 and EN 1092-1 are NOT dimensionally interchangeable. ASME uses Class 150/300/600/900/1500/2500 pressure-temperature ratings; EN uses PN 10/16/25/40/63/100/160/250/320/400 ratings. Bolt patterns, facing dimensions, and gasket dimensions differ. Saudi Aramco ASME-designed piping systems require ASME B16.5 flanges unless EN flanges are explicitly permitted by the project specification.
Saudi Aramco engineering standards (SAES, SAEP, SAMSS) reference both ASTM and EN standards in SAEP-347 Annex 4. Gulf Union Ozone suppliers must provide material certifications per EN 10204 3.1 for pressure-retaining components regardless of whether the underlying product standard is ASTM or EN. Saudi Aramco GI-0002.100 requires positive material identification (PMI) by XRF on all alloy and stainless components. ASTM A105 carbon steel forgings, ASTM A106 seamless pipe, and ASTM A216 WCB castings are the most common carbon steel product forms in SAEP-347 Annex 4. EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate must accompany each delivery — specifying heat number, chemical analysis, mechanical test results, and inspector signature. Saudi Aramco Goods Receipt inspectors reject deliveries without traceable 3.1 certificates on pressure-retaining components regardless of the product standard used.

Gulf Union Ozone navigates both ASTM and EN standards fluently — issuing quotations that cross-reference ASTM product standards (A105, A106, A216, A182, A234) with EN equivalents (EN 10222, EN 10255, EN 10213, EN 10253) for customers procuring to mixed-standard specifications. EPC contractors on Saudi Aramco LSTK projects frequently specify ASTM for piping components while specifying EN 10204 3.1 for material certification — Gulf Union Ozone satisfies both simultaneously. European-manufactured piping components supplied with CE PED marking and EN 10204 3.1 are accepted at Saudi Aramco Goods Receipt where ASTM equivalence is documented. Material traceability from mill heat to installed component — maintained through EN 10204 3.1 heat number reference — is required for SAEP-347 plant piping and equipment at Jubail, Yanbu, Jeddah, and Dhahran Aramco facilities.
