Material traceability is the ability to link a specific piece of material — a valve, fitting, flange, or pipe spool — back through the entire supply chain to its originating mill heat (the batch of steel from which it was produced). The heat number is the key: every MTC, every physical mark, every packing list must reference the same heat number to maintain the chain.
Saudi Aramco requires material traceability for the same reason it requires SAEP-347: critical piping materials in hydrocarbon service must be verifiable. If a line rupture or fitting failure occurs, Aramco's investigation team must be able to retrieve the original mill test data and determine whether the failure resulted from a material non-conformance or an installation or design issue. Without traceability, that investigation is impossible.
For stockist suppliers, traceability is the core challenge: the stockist receives material from a mill (or from another distributor), stores it, and later supplies it to a customer. Every handoff in this chain creates an opportunity for the documentary link to break. SAEP-347 and Aramco's quality system requirements prevent this.
An MTC that is missing any of the following elements will typically be rejected by Aramco's receiving inspection — causing delays and potential return of materials. Gulf Union Ozone verifies all MTCs against these requirements before shipment.
PMI (Positive Material Identification) is a non-destructive test that physically verifies a material's chemical composition in the field or at the stockist's warehouse, using handheld XRF (X-ray fluorescence) or OES (optical emission spectrometry) instruments. It provides an independent check that the material in hand matches its MTC.
Saudi Aramco's SAEP-1142 defines when PMI is mandatory. For stockist-supplied materials, PMI is required for: all alloy steel materials (Cr-Mo grades), all stainless steel grades (304, 316, duplex), all non-ferrous materials (copper alloys, nickel alloys), and any carbon steel material where the physical heat marking is absent or illegible.
PMI is typically not required for standard carbon steel (A234 WPB, A105, API 5L Grade B) when the heat markings are present and the MTC is intact — but Aramco QC inspectors may request it on a spot-check basis or when an MTC appears questionable.

Gulf Union Ozone offers PMI testing at our Jeddah warehouse prior to shipment. We use handheld XRF instruments calibrated to ASTM E1728 standards. PMI reports are included in the documentation pack on request — no additional lead time required for common alloy and stainless grades in stock.
When you receive an MTC from a stockist, follow these verification steps before submitting materials to Aramco's receiving inspection:
Look at the heat number printed on the MTC. Then physically check the material — fittings will have the heat number stamped on the body; pipes will have it stencilled on the pipe wall. If they don't match, the traceability chain is broken and the material should be quarantined until the discrepancy is resolved.
The MTC must state the material specification (e.g., ASTM A234 WPB) that matches your Purchase Order. A common error is receiving A234 WPC MTCs when WPB was ordered — the two are different grades with different strength requirements. Check the grade designation exactly as specified in the PO.
Compare the reported chemistry values against the tabulated limits in the applicable standard. For A234 WPB: Carbon ≤0.30%, Manganese 0.29–1.06%, Phosphorus ≤0.05%, Sulfur ≤0.058%. Any value exceeding the standard limit is a non-conformance, regardless of whether the MTC was accepted by the manufacturer.
The actual tested values must be at or above the specified minimums. For A234 WPB: Yield Strength ≥240 MPa, Tensile Strength ≥415 MPa, Elongation ≥22%. Do not accept MTCs that only state "conforms to" without providing the actual test values — Aramco inspectors will reject these.
The MTC must state its EN 10204 certification type: 3.1 (manufacturer's authorized inspector) or 3.2 (independent third party). If your PO specifies 3.2 and you receive a 3.1 certificate, this is a non-conformance. Request the correct certificate type before accepting the shipment.
