API 5L (Specification for Line Pipe) covers seamless and welded steel pipe for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It is the primary standard for Saudi Aramco gas gathering, gas injection, and transmission pipeline projects specified under SAES-L-450 (on-plot pipelines) and SAES-L-460 (sour service).
Gulf Union Ozone maintains Jeddah stock of API 5L in grades Gr B, X42, X52, X60, X65, and X70 in both PSL1 and PSL2 qualification levels, in seamless (SMLS) and ERW/LSAW options depending on grade and OD. For Aramco gas pipeline projects, PSL2 is typically mandatory. PSL2 adds: mandatory Charpy impact CVN testing (longitudinal and transverse), tighter carbon equivalent (CEIIW) limits to control weldability, mandatory NDT (AUT/manual UT or radiography) on all welds, and more stringent dimensional and straightness tolerances than PSL1.

Gas containing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) above the NACE MR0175 threshold (0.3 kPa partial pressure, or 0.0003 MPa) is classified as "sour" and requires materials that resist sulphide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). Saudi Aramco SAES-L-460 governs sour service pipeline material selection in the Kingdom.
For carbon steel sour gas pipelines, key requirements include: HIC-resistant (HIC-R) API 5L pipe manufactured to controlled sulphur chemistry and inclusion-shape treatment (typically calcium treatment), hardness limits of 22 HRC (248 HV) maximum in base metal, weld, and HAZ, and restricted chemistry for PWHT and weldability control. Sour service carbon steel must pass NACE TM0284 (HIC) and NACE TM0177 (SSC) testing — these test results should be included in the EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
For severely sour or chloride-containing sour gas service, duplex stainless steel 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205) or super duplex 2507 (UNS S32750) may be specified by the project engineer.
