An air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pump is a positive-displacement pump driven by compressed air rather than an electric motor. Inside the pump housing, two flexible diaphragms are connected by a common shaft and actuated alternately by an air distribution valve — as one diaphragm is pushed outward by compressed air to discharge fluid, the other is pulled inward on its suction stroke, maintaining a near-continuous flow. The reciprocating action draws fluid in through the suction ball or flap valves and expels it through the discharge valves on each stroke. AODD pumps are the preferred choice for many Saudi Arabia chemical applications for several reasons: they are inherently self-priming without any pre-filling, they can run completely dry indefinitely without damage or overheating, they handle slurries and abrasive particles that would destroy centrifugal pump impellers and mechanical seals, and they have no rotating mechanical seals — eliminating the most common centrifugal pump failure mode and the risk of toxic chemical leakage. AODD pumps are also stall-safe — if the discharge valve is closed with the pump running, the pump simply stalls against the discharge pressure without overheating or damage. The flow rate can be controlled simply by adjusting the compressed air supply pressure or volume. ATEX Zone 1/2 rated AODD pumps are available in conductive PVDF and SS 316L for use in hazardous areas in Saudi Arabia oil and gas and petrochemical facilities. Use an AODD pump when you need self-priming, dry-run tolerance, slurry handling, or operation in a hazardous classified zone.

Selecting the correct body and diaphragm materials for aggressive chemicals is critical for safe and reliable AODD pump operation in Saudi Arabia process and chemical plants. For hydrofluoric acid (HF), which attacks virtually all metals and most elastomers, the correct AODD pump specification is a PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride, trade name Kynar) body with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) diaphragms and PTFE ball valves — PVDF provides excellent HF resistance at concentrations up to 60% and temperatures up to 130°C, while PTFE is essentially inert to HF at all concentrations. Metal body materials are not suitable for HF service. For wet chlorine gas, chlorine water, and sodium hypochlorite, PVDF body with PTFE diaphragm is also the standard selection — PVDF resists chlorine oxidation that rapidly degrades PP and many elastomers. For hydrochloric acid (HCl) at concentrations above 20%, polypropylene begins to swell and PVDF is preferred; PTFE diaphragm is mandatory. For hot concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4 above 80°C) or mixtures of acids, Hastelloy C-276 metallic body with PTFE diaphragm provides the broadest chemical resistance, as PVDF can be attacked by strong oxidising acids at elevated temperature. For general dilute acid and alkali service (pH 2–12) at ambient temperature, polypropylene body with EPDM or PTFE diaphragm is cost-effective and widely used.
