NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber), also known as Buna-N or nitrile rubber, is the most commonly used O-ring elastomer for oil and fuel applications. It has excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, hydraulic fluids (mineral oil types), diesel fuel, and petrol. NBR is rated for temperatures from −40°C to +120°C and is the standard material for automotive engine seals, hydraulic cylinders, and pneumatic fittings. It is not recommended for use with chlorinated solvents, ketones, or esters (use FKM/Viton for those).

FKM is specified for high-temperature engine applications, chemical plant sealing, and specific synthetic hydraulic fluids.
