Why must I use distilled water (not tap water) in a battery?
Tap water contains dissolved minerals, chlorides, and other contaminants that react with the sulphuric acid electrolyte in lead-acid batteries. These contaminants form insoluble sulphates on the battery plates (sulphation), reduce capacity, and shorten battery life. In Saudi Arabia, tap water is particularly high in mineral content due to desalination processes. Always use distilled or deionised water for battery top-up.

How do I check if my truck battery needs topping up with distilled water?
Remove the battery cell caps (on serviceable batteries) and check the electrolyte level in each cell. The correct level is approximately 10-15mm above the top of the plates, or between the MIN and MAX markers on the cell. Add distilled water (never acid) to bring it to the correct level. Check after charging as electrolyte level rises during charge. Sealed (maintenance-free) batteries do not require water top-up.
